The Bamfield Huu-ay-aht Community Forest covers 360 ha of primarily old-growth forest around Upper Anacla and Bamfield. The forest is managed by a volunteer group of local directors. Currently, the directors are managing to prioritize ecosystem health, followed by social and cultural values, followed by economic values.
The recent log salvage operation near the Life Saving Trail was a trial operation to remove some downed wood without impacting the standing trees. The forest has been partnering with Somas Forest Products to mill and sell the wood.
As the wood is old-growth (higher quality than second-growth), and harvested with thought for ecosystem and social values, it can be marketed at a premium price. Proceeds from wood sales fund building and upkeep of trails in the BHCF and donations to community projects including: the West Park Toilets, Centennial Park, upper Anacla’s playground, the Community Hall, and the Active Transportation Network initiative.
The next AGM is tentatively scheduled for May 21, 2026. Residents of Bamfield and Anacla are encouraged to join the AGM as a member, vote for directors, and can join as a
director themselves. Contact email: BHCFcontact@gmail.com
